My friend just got this 2022 maverick lariat hybrid, and the engine temperature gauge on the dashboard seems a bit... lazy, like slow to respond

Especially when it's chilly out, it takes forever to climb up to where it should be.

He asked me to check the truck out, cause I have a maverick too. It makes me wonder if it's actually reading the real temperature or just taking its sweet time.

is there an easy to reach spot on the engine where you could temporarily screw in an analog gauge without making a huge mess or taking half the engine apart?

I'm just curious to see if my gut feeling about the slow response is right.

The 2.5L hybrid doesn't have a traditional analog temp gauge so it's not like what you're expecting. Everything is going digital now. It's got smoothing logic (the display) so it may look like it's slower to rise. Just be cautious. The space could be tight so you'll need a 1/8" NPT adapter and T-fitting just so you can avoid disturbing the sensor.

Yeah, that makes sense. Digital gauges do act differently these days. Has the OP thought about adding a separate temp gauge, or are they planning to keep the factory setup for now?

I think you should grabbing an OBD-II scanner and an app. Something like "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" or "Torque Pro" for Android, or whatever's good for iPhones.

That way, you can actually ECT data right from the car's computer. You'll see all the ups and downs as the hybrid engine does its thing, without any of that dashboard smoothing. It'll quickly tell you if the temperature is genuinely slow to rise, or if it's just that sneaky display messing with you (which is almost certainly the case!).

It's the easiest and safest way to get the true picture, with zero risk to the truck or its warranty

I'd discourage tapping into the coolant system cause it can cause issues!
It's safer and more accurate to use an OBD-II scanner that reads live data to check real-time engine temperature.
But it's actually normal for a hybrid Maverick's engine temp gauge to be slow, especially in cold weather.
Ford gauges also tend to show a normal range rather than exact temperatures.
So unless, there are other symptoms or issues, I wouldn't interfere with the electricals.

Just tagging in to say the slow warm up on the hybrid is pretty typical, especially in cooler temps. The dash gauge is more of a general indicator than a precision tool and Ford's smoothing logic adds to that delay. If you haven't already, try pulling live data with Forscan or a Bluetooth OBD reader. Some have mapped out the dash segments to actual temps and it lines up pretty well once the engine hits around 180°F. Did your friend notice any drivability issues or is it just the gauge behavior that's raising eyebrows?

Yeah, I've noticed that too, it takes a bit to warm up at first. The lag on the dash makes it seem worse than it is, but looking at the live data sorts it out quickly.
